Gaslamp Fantasy Challenge
The Gaslamp Fantasy challange last ran back in 2014, in the early days of Reading Challenges in WWEnd. I'd like to have another go at it for 2021. Below is the description from the 2014 challenge.
Gaslamp Fantasy is historical fantasy fiction that:
- is set between 1811 and 1901 - from the beginning of the Regency Era through the end of the reign of Queen Victoria
- is usually (but not exclusively) set in England or one of the British colonies
- may be similar to Gothic literature (ie: Dracula, Frankenstein, Edgar Allan Poe)
- has supernatural elements and/or some form of magic
- sometimes focuses on class, manners, romance, etc. (in the style of Jane Austen)
If you're looking for reading ideas, check out THIS LIST.
Gaslamp Fantasy is similar to steampunk but with far less focus on the science and gadgets. To put it simplistically, gaslamp is fantasy and steampunk is sci-fi. The lines between the two can get a bit fuzzy, however, so don't stress your brain about it overmuch.
