BSFA nominated novella. It originally appeared in Interzone, #90 December 1994. It is included in the anthology The Year's Best Science Fiction: Twelth Annual Collection (1995), edited by Gardner Dozois. The story was later incorportated in the novel Freeze Frames (1995).

A collection of fantasy tales set in mysterious and bewitching forests includes the adventures of a woodcutter's daughter-turned-private detective, a young tribesman who is torn from his forest home, and a woodsman's unexpected encounter with a witch.
