Synopsis
This world of this novella is an alternate 1952 Ireland. There are some similarities to our 'real' history, of course, but also significant differences. In this world, certain small areas will not permit 'modern' technologies to work, instead allowing only 'older, medieval-level technologies' to continue to function. These are called either 'exclusion zones' or 'blue zones' (for the color that mapmakers traditionally use to designate them.)
A steam-powered ship entering a blue zone will find its engine ceases to work, leaving the ship drifting at the mercy of the currents and winds, sometimes leading to it being sunk. Also, the current technology of this world lags behind our actual technology of the 1950s, lending a more 'steampunk' feel.
Saoirse was born on Great Blasket Island, in one of those exclusion zones, but was sent at eight years of age, to live with her Aunt Mary in Dingle Town, across the bay from Great Blasket. Now twenty, Saoirse only been back to Great Blasket at increasingly longer intervals.
Saoirse is contacted by an American university professor, Hugh Bryne, who has been sent over to understand how the British are dealing with their 'blue' zones, which also exist in the Americas. Hugh asks Saoirse if she'll escort him over to Great Blasket, where her father is the An Ri, or local ruler. Reluctantly, Saoirse agrees, but insists that Professor Bryne must first come to Dingle so she can meet him before committing to have her father take him over to Great Blasket.
Both Bryne and Saoirse will experience far more than they ever expected on Great Blasket.
