So, we're off to a great start with the RYO and I thought we should have a thread for the challenge banners.

The idea with the banners is to give folks something they can post on their blogs so they can share the reading challenges they're taking part in.  We had many awesome bloggers post the WoGF banner on their sites last year and it really helped grow the challenge beyond our sphere of influence and brought many great new members to WWEnd.

A cool banner can bring people into your challenge just like a cool book cover grabs your attention at the bookstore.  To that end we can all help each other by contributing a bit of time and talent and it's just one more way we can participate in the reading challenges together.

  • Challenge Hosts:  If you are hosting a challenge and you want a little help creating a snazzy banner to go with your challenge you can use this thread to look for ideas, inspiration and volunteers.
  • Challenge Participants and Others:  If you've got some design talent and you want to lend a hand let folks know here as well.

Let me be the first to offer my assistance.  I've helped a couple members with their challenge banners already and I really enjoy making 'em so let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

You can help me make a banner for the Read the Sequel Challenge. I have no idea what this is or where to put it, so help would be much appreciated.

Hi Dave,

I have a cool photo of Christmas lights that I'd thought be fun. Can you resize and add the text onto this for the 2014 I Just Have To Read More Of That Author Challenge?

I had an idea for a banner for my Book Ones challenge, but I don't know if I'm going to be able to implement it. I need to find some time to have a go at it.

I can help if anyone wants - I am not a professional designer, but can use my Adobe Elements to put something not to complex together.  Just leave a post for any requests.

I've got this one going and if I get my home internet back on today I'll get it posted. I'm getting a little shaky being disconnected. My phone is keeping me from going bonkers but just barely.

Here's what I came up with.  I modified your pic to use for the background.  Hope you like it.  If not let me know and I'll give it another go.

Hey, JS, for the banners you have to host the image off site and add a link to your hosted site banner on the challenge edit page.  We can't allow uploaded images through our firewall.  The alternative is to send the image to me via email and I'll add it to the site.

I'm happy for you to add the Elizabeth Noun one to the challenge.

I had a similar but different idea, using heraldry symbols to make a coat-of-arms, but I doubt I'll ever get around to making it. I don't have the tools at home, and I don't have the time at work. And I might not have the ability, but I wouldn't necessarily have let that stop me.

Cool.  It's there now and you can certainly replace it later if you get around to fleshing out your idea.  Heraldry symbols would be really cool.  Wish I had thought of that!

Thanks very much for the offer! I've actually been working on a banner for the Authors of Color Challenge myself...albeit slowly and with a lot of trial and error, since my graphics skills 1) are very rusty and 2) don't include a familiarity with GIMP. (I just made the switch to Linux a couple of years ago.) It's not perfect, but I've managed to create a banner that I'm fairly pleased with, so I'm going to stick with it.

(Though if you or anyone else has a good idea for a Short Fiction Challenge banner, that would be much appreciated. I've been thinking about it since creating that challenge and still have no idea what its banner should look like.)

Oh, that's awesome! If it's okay with you, I'd like to edit your banner so that the tiny images in the book are all taken from SFF short fiction cover art and then use the edited version as the challenge banner. (Assuming I can make my idea work. But I'm guessing/hoping that the process will be more time-consuming than it is actually difficult.)

Do with it whatever you'd like Jain! I was just throwing it out as there as a concept, not as a "Hey use this" type o' thing.

Also, might it be easier to replace the photos with random text rather than book covers? Just a thought.

Nothing off the top of my head but I'll noodle on it a bit and see if I can come up with something.  Glad you like subliminal message in the other banner!  That gets right down to the root of it I think

Hi kwaidan66.  You set your challenge to start on Febuary 1st so it won't show on the list until then and you can't add books until then either.  It's something we're going to modify as soon as we can find the time.

The plan is to hide the public challenges from everyone but the challenge host (you in this case) until the kick off date.  You'll be able to edit and add books before hand so it's ready to go with examples on the date you specify as the start date.  Fingers crossed we can fix it this weekend!

I'm not crazy about my Creature Feature banner. If anyone can come up something better, please do! (I think the problem I had with coming with an idea is that I thought it should be vague. I don't it want it too dark/spooky because the challenge isn't limited to horror. And I want it encompass all possible concepts of "creature" and not just vampires or whatever.) Thanks in advance for any assistance!

PS Admin, your banners are fabulous! The two newest ones are grand.

I wanted to get some version of this posted before the weekend, but here's my first attempt at a proper logo for The Book of Ones (assuming I can figure out how to attach it). I don't know if it would work if I linked the challenge right to the attachment, here, but if not can you move it somewhere sensible and link it up, please?

I see the problem you're having with the creature banner.  It would be simple to go all horror on it but no spooky creatures is a bit tougher.  If something occurs to me to try and give it a go this weekend.

Doc, the new banner looks great!  I've added it to the page so you're good to go.  I like how the RYO page is filling up with all these banners.  Lots of variety and color.  The banners give the challenges a bit of personality.

Cool beans and you are most welcome!  I'm the same with the old fashioned typewriters.  The mechanics are just beautiful.  I love the precision and symmetry of all those bent levers and rows of round keys.

A bit. Some of the nominated books (and in some years, more than some) are better than the winners.
Cracked me up when I first saw it, though.

Can you help me with a cover for Ballard's "Vermillion Sands"? It's always been a bucket list title for me, but I want to read it specifically for the "Short Fiction" challenge. I promise I'll write a review if I can get the cover added. How can I help you do that?

I think you mean adding the book (the cover is part of the process). The proper place is here:

https://www.worldswithoutend.com/mbbs22/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=5...

but I should warn you there is a backlog.

Dave, thank you for the Pick and Mix banner..Not sure what is being picked and mixed, but they are surely mixed - nd very pretty. Great fun,and the title of the challenge plain to see! Thank you,and I am happy to have it as my banner. It was getting pretty lonely there,so few of us bannerless, looking enviously or pitifully at our neighbours Many thanks.

Well, it's not exactly clear is it?  I opted for pretty mostly but if you think of the glass balls as "worlds" that are all mixed up and you have to pick from so many beautiful shiny ones....  Yeah, it's pretty.

Any way a banner could be made for the LGBT Challenge? I haven't touched Photoshop or Gimp in many years, and I was never great at that stuff anyway.

Pretty please? :D

There are a lot of LGBT symbols but none is more iconic than the rainbow flag so I started with that and decided to just keep it really simple with a nice bold font in white with a drop shadow to give it a little dimension and separate it from the yellow stripe in particular.  What do you think?

I see the problem you're having with the creature banner. It would be simple to go all horror on it but no spooky creatures is a bit tougher. If something occurs to me to try and give it a go this weekend.

Thanks Admin. Whatever you may come up with will be fab I'm certain.

Took a little longer than expected but here's an idea for the Creature Feature.  What do you think?

Hrmmm. I certainly like it more than the present banner. But I must confess that the enormously misproportioned gorilla-like beast in the center seems to draw too much attention to itself and away from the other awesome creatures. (Too nitpicky. Yes. Sorry.) Plus, headless peoples.

You might need to upload it to a photo hosting site like photobucket. Or maybe it has something to do with the privacy settings on the flickr account? Flickr photos are often blocked from downloading and/or linking.

What daxxh means is that neither of us have permissions to store the image on WWE where the rest of the RYO Challenge images are:

The person who created the challenge (daxxh, in this case) just needs to edit the challenge and insert a link to the banner. (At least that's how it worked with the challenges I created.)

You should be able to link to any offsite image as long as it's a full URL. The star field image there now is hosted offsite on NASA so it's obviously working. It must be that your image hosting service is blocking the offsite link.

When I see a new RYO go up I'll go grab the image and post it locally and change the image link. That way the pic will load faster and I know it won't go missing or get accidentally deleted.  Plus, our site is secure so an offsite image will sometimes throw a security warning, depending on browser and browser settings etc, up at the user which can be confusing. Originally they're all hosted offsite unless it's one that I've made for the challenge host.

I've created two new challenges--a Sub-Genre Focus challenge and a Detective SFF Challenge--but don't have the time and creative energy to make banners for either challenge right now. If anyone else is interested in doing so, that would be much appreciated! Otherwise, I'll get to it when I can get to it. :-)

Thanks for fixing the banner for the 2015 Space Opera Challenge! I seem to only be able to add pictures from the Astronomy Picture of the Day site. Anything else doesn't show. Can you put last years banner up for the Read the Sequel Challenge? I liked that one. Thanks!

No problem on the banner and a great challenge.  Love me some space opera!  The issue with the images is that they sometimes don't show unless they're on a secure site to match ours.  I usually download them and put them on our site and update the link when I see 'em.

The sequel banner is back up too.  Cheers!

Hi Dave,

Can you update the 2014 I Just HAVE to Read More of That Author banner for 2015?

Also, I'm going to host a Tolkien challenge, as I've wanted to reread LOTR and explore some of the posthumous work edited by his son. And I'm betting there are at least a few folks like me who've never read more that The Hobbit and the trilogy but have always been interested in what Christopher Tolkien has gathered. So if you have any ideas for a banner and have the time to put one together, I'd appreciate it. Perhaps the pic from the cover of the Humphrey Carpenter biography? Thanks in advance!
