Welcome to the WWEnd Roll-Your-Own Reading Challenge.  If you haven't read it yet, check out our challenge intro blog post for the story and the challenge page itself for the details.  If you have any questions or comments about the challenge over all ask them here.

As new challenges get created their hosts will start individual threads here so you can ask your challenge specific questions in those.

Join in a challenge or roll your own and happy reading!

Excellent!

I joined the site in late 2012, so I am glad to get my first crack at the Grand Master reading challenge.

One I considered giving myself last year was to start a big series. There are more than a few I have never read - Game of Thrones, Dune, Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. To that end I just read Foundation for the first time - plenty more in that series.

Good luck to all in 2014 - I look forward to reading your reviews!

Go to this page

and select your challenge - 1 of 2 currently. Or suggest a new one here in the forum... it might become #3

Click the big logo to get to the challenge page then scroll down.  There are only 2 RYOs so far:  GMRC and WoGF.  Perhaps I should label that section.

Ok, now that I have picked my challenge (Grandmasters, because I joined last year and missed it the first time) how do I add books to my list? I did not get any handy dandy check boxes like I had last challenge.

Guessing that the author addition is still being worked on; I was able to add a book by adding it to my reading list and then checking the box.

To add my own request - authors that I have read are shaded on the Science Fiction grandmasters list; looks like the Horror Grandmasters list ( https://www.worldswithoutend.com/authors_horror_grandmasters.asp ) does not have this feature. Yet.

To make the BookTrackr work for all challenge we took out the author tag part.  Now you just go to the novel page, add it to your reading list then check all the RYOs that apply and hit submit.  I'm doing WoGF and GMRC so I was able to find 2 books from women Grand Masters that will work for both challenges.

Author addition has been disabled for simplicity.  Fixing the Horror GM list is on our list of edits.  I think it just moved up the priority list since we really need it now with this new challenge.

I'm not getting any RYO box to check when I add a book to my reading list. (Apparently I'm a Luddite today.)

On the novel page in the BookTrackr section there is a list of all the challenges you're signed up for that looks like this:

Check "Add to My Reading List" first then check the proper challenge.  If you are logged in and don't see that section let us know.

Whargoul just told me he tweaked something so it should be there now if it wasn't before.  Refresh that page and try again.  Thanks.

OOPS!

There was a hiccup that was preventing some people from adding books to their challenges but it should be corrected now.

No matter how much you try, there's always kinks during a release.

Looks great. I have an idea for a challenge that should fit in well with others, but it'll have to wait until I have some time tomorrow.

Edit: Oh, and for some reason, the image(?) at the top of this thread doesn't seem to load for me.

I'm really interested to see what kind of challenges come up.  Charles Dee hit on the translated works already which is a really cool idea.  I'm looking forward to yours, Dr.

Thomcat pointed out the image problem AND the solution in a PM so it's fixed now.  Thanks ya'll!

You are welcome, of course. Here is my half-formed idea, which could also be promoted during the summer months -

Young Adult novels challenge

Not sure if the existing database has (or needs) categories for it, but there is at least one YA list (David Brin) and one YA award (Locus) already on the site. Not sure how many YA users this site has, but maybe offer a "reduced" challenge for Summer reading?

My idea for a challenge: faerie mythology.

(Male or female authors, doesn't have to be a new-to-you author. And I know of at least one series that qualifies, so I'm thinking maybe allowing more than 1 book in a series?)

Now I have to go check to see if any of the books I have planned are in the WWEnd database.....

This should be a fun set of challenges!

I'm logged in and the book I'm reading has the challenge listed that I want to credit the book to-but I can't tick the box. What am I doing wrong?

I think I've come up with an idea that's been percolating between the WOGF challenge and my own challenge to read all the Hugos: Did you discover an author in a past challenge or in the past few years and think, "I just HAVE to read more of that author," but your reading list is so long, you haven't gotten to it? Maybe you want to immerse yourself in one author. Pick 12 books by authors you recently discovered and read another one of their works. Perhaps 12 books by Ursula LeGuin, or another book by every author you read during WOGF or Grand Masters. Write 12 reviews in 12 months and have fun!

But I need help. I haven't figured out where I create the challenge.

Thanks!

Steve

Young Adult novels challenge

?

I would totally do a YA challenge. I was thinking of trying to complete the Locus YA awards and this would fit nicely.

I was thinking of repeating the WOGF one (I joined in July and ended up only reading 11... so close!) but so many of those 11 authors were series authors, I'm definitely going to do the Read the Sequel one instead. I think I'm also going to do the Authors of Color challenge. I'm tempted to pick a third but since I'm also a member of three book groups IRL (and, you know, have to work and stuff) I think that'd be overdoing it. (Otherwise I would be sooo up for a YA challenge.) There are just so many good challenge ideas!

Will there be a thread where we can request adding books to the database like there was for the WOGF 2013?

Hey Steve, it sounds like daxxh's Read the Sequel challenge might be what you're looking for.

To create your own challenge just click the big "Roll-Your-Own" button in the right sidebar on the challenge page.  Don't forget that you can create your own personal challenge too and mark it private.  For instance, for your Hugo goal you can make a personal challenge to read 50 Hugos this year and fill it up with the books you intend to read.  Of course, a Hugo challenge would be a popular idea though you might have to make it fewer books to keep it attractive to other members.

So far all the challenges are just 12 books which is cool since that means you can probably choose more than one.  I'm on 2 so far and already I want to do the In Translation and Masterworks challenges.  And it's only going to get worse as you guys keep making more cool challenges!

thecynicalromantic - 2014-01-08 6:43 AM Will there be a thread where we can request adding books to the database like there was for the WOGF 2013?

There is a general request thread that you can use for now.  We're actually working on a book request form that will streamline things quite a bit.  Last year I got requests in multiple threads and via email etc. and it was a lot of work to organize etc.  The new form will create a first-come first-served list that will be easier to track.  There will be a flag so you can let us know if it's a challenge request versus a general request and we'll weight the challenge books more so we can try to be timely with delivery on those.

Now here's the best part.  We're getting closer to opening up the site for user submission of books so there will be a handful of select Uber User volunteers with access to help us keep up with the requests.  Should make things go much faster so keep an eye out for those new developments in the next few weeks.  Fingers crossed!

I would like to request the addition of a book Nancy' Farmer's "Lord of Opium" sequel to her "House of Scorpion" which you do have listed. Is it too early to start making these requests for additions & is this forum thread where I should place the requests?

This is so cool>>>I am going crazy all ready!! I signed up for three challenges...and I can see two more that I would love to add, but I barely got through last year's (my first time) and did not write the reviews I had all the best intentions for... I am personally challenging myself to write the reveiws this time! thanks for all the work to keep this site so active, informative and fun!!

Hello,

I wanted to add Nnedi Okorafor's "Who Fears Death" to my list of books for the 2014 Speculative Fiction by Authors of Color Challenge, but I'm not being given the option to do that on the Book's BookTrackr page. I checked and I could add any of her other three books that are listed here on WWEnd, but not that one. I assume there's some kind of glitch here? Or am I missing something?

There is a general request thread for now but we'll have a request form to make things easier shortly.

The challenges can be addictive!  I've signed up for 3 already too.  I'm a little afraid of what new challenges will come along that I'll HAVE to join.   I'm glad you're back for more and don't sweat the reviews.  They get easier as you write them... or so I've heard.  Thanks for the kind words about the site.  Our members make it fun to work on.

That is indeed a glitch!  In our database we tag every book as SF, Fantasy or Horror as a basic category for sorting and tracking etc.  Turns out that we did not mark Who Fears Death as any of those so it was being filtered out for all the challenges.  It's fixed now.  Thanks for letting us know and my apologies for the inconvenience.

When I first chanced upon WWEnd I was drooling over all the lists.I love lists! I envy some of the stats pages of old--timer members, and am busily filling in the lists where I can.I wouldnt mind doing a personal twelve book challenge called ''Pick a List,Any List'' and then try to make some inroads into the list of my choice.I particularly have my eye on the WWEnd Most Read Books list any other participants could do a list of their choice. After all,the lists are the bedrock of WWEnd
Havent the faintest idea how to go about getting on the list though, since I am technologically challenged

A belated congratulations for coming up with this year's challenge format - it's addictive!

I'm considering making a "There's Genre in My Literature!"  challenge, but I might already be overextended with the challenges I've signed up for.  Perhaps if there's interest...

There's Genre in My Literature! sounds like a cool idea.  If you're worried about taking on too much you can always make it a short challenge.  Most of the challenges seem to be sticking with the default 12 books.  Why not just 6 or even 3?

Ok, now, here's a weirdness. I created a challenge that I plan to launch later in the year. I set it to "private" expecting to change that setting later closer to the challenge start date. And now it's vanished. *cue eerie music* It's not on the list of challenges, I can't add books to it. It's just....gone. I assume it will appear on the scheduled date but what if I want to edit it or delete it or whatever? And why can't I add books to it in advance?

(I have another private challenge and it appears on the list of challenges (though it's not included in the count and I assume no one else sees it). So I'm guessing the problem is the date and not the private setting.)

Well, that's an unexpected occurance.  I've gone into the DB and set the start date to 1/1/2014 so you can at least see it again while whargoul looks into the issue today.  The list option will show on the novel page now so you can load it up.

Yeah, the private challenges can't be seen by others and they don't count in the stats.  There are only 3 right now which is a bit surprising to me.  I thought there would be more but I guess with 20+ public challenges going there's lots to choose from already.

I submitted book requests using the new form feature and got a "Down For Maintenance" message. Does that mean the requests were not submitted?

Just for curiosity, I submitted my requests a second time and again got a "Down for Maintenance" message. Everything else on the site seems fine so I think the problem is with the form submission.

Yeah, the form is not complete and shouldn't be out on the live site.  We made some updates to the page and forgot to remove the form link before we deployed.  I'll take it down shortly.  Sorry to get your hopes up.

HRO - 2014-01-24 11:49 PM I have a private challenge and when I try to edit it, there seems to no longer be an option to choose between "public" and "private." Am I confuzzled or is this a glitch?

That is a glitch. Or we've got pixlexia. I'll have whargoul look at the code.

Any news on fixing this?

The same thing happened with my private challenge. I then changed the start date to 2015 and now the challenge has disappeared, or at least it's invisible to me. I hope this can be fixed easily as putting books on the list (long before reading them) is half the fun of these challenges.

I quite look forward to doing my own private (and crazy big) reading challenge next year. RYO has been brilliant and people have come up with such great challenge ideas that there is more than enough inspiration for the 2015 challenge(s).
