History
Random House and its subsidiaries are one of the largest publishing concerns in the world. Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer founded the press in 1925 when they purchased the "Modern Library" imprint from another publisher, Horace Liveright. According to publishing legend, Bennett Cerf was quoted as saying that the pair had just planned on producing a few titles "at random", hence the birth of the name. Random House grew by the strength of its backlist, and by acquisition, being acquired itself by Bertelsmann, a German media corporation, in 1998.
