It was hard reading Gateway out of the context of 1976. I imagine the psychological development of a fearful, self-doubting anti-hero with ambiguous sexuality was an astonishing tale at the time. Bouncing between timelines to maintain anticipation remains an effective narrative device. however, even at the time his description of psychotherapy would have been out-of-date. ultimately, the "therapist"'s increasingly sadistic treatment of the patient becomes distractingly intolerable.
