I am on a quest to read the classics of SF. This one sits on so many lists as to make it unavoidable. And for good reason. Enoch, whose name is clearly symbolic, represents the best in humanity. He is compassionate, courageous, curious, disciplined, and open minded. He is a voracious autodidact. If the world would be represented by only one person, he would be a good candidate.
The book raises questions. If we were to encounter alien life, would be ready for it? Are we truly interested in getting along with each other? To what degree do we trust the spiritual for our guidance? If wwe cannot find peacefull solutions for our personal lives, what chance do we have on a global scale?
Read Way Station because it gives a glimpse into the nuclear paranoia of the cold war era. Read it because it challenges our provincialism. Read it ask yourself do would I respond to the Other around me? Can I be kind without full understanding?
