This book is both a murder mystery and hard core sci-fi with enjoyable solar astophysics. Brin's writing style is a little bit clunky, however. Jacob's "scizophrenia" is not explained well and it's hard to buy into the conclusion that he has no pathology at all (that it's just a "game" he plays with his mind). Starts well and worth reading if nothing else but to get into the later books in the series, but overall not truly memorable. I am biased, however, because I do not enjoy murder "who-dun-it" type stories -- it was an unnecessary and unwelcome mix to the sci-fi.
