I liked this one better than Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The underlying chess theme connected the story threads and moved things forward. Plus, there's the poem Jabberwocky in this story which I love.
With a story like this you are able to see the shift in Victorian culture that created the modern notion of childhood and the dedicated literature for children that accompanied that shift. It isn't biblical, it isn't moralistic, it isn't educational. Through the Looking-Glass is just a fun bit of nonsense create to entertain children at their level.
Overall, another cute read aloud for children.
