I read this book after watching Nicholas Roeg's 1976 film adaptation starring David Bowie. Not that the film is bad, it isn't, but as with most books turned film, the book is better. The novel concerns an alien who comes to Earth to save his own species from destruction but ends up losing his way in America, with the help of copious amounts of alcohol. I really enjoyed the characterization of the alien, especially as he veers increasingly off course as the novel progresses.
