I really loved this book. I remember reading it years ago as a teenager. In fact, it was very instrumental in getting me hooked on sci-fi.

Simak has often been called a pastoralist sci-fi writer and you can see why in this book. There is no hard science and what science is mentioned is very vague. This is a group of 8 stories about the downfall of Man and the rise of the Dogs and the Brotherhood of the Beasts. They are told as legends handed down by Dogs who now believe Man is a myth. Interestingly Mankind goes out with a whimper rather than with a bang or blaze of glory. Jenkins, the main robot in most of the stories, actually turns out to be the most human of all the characters.
