Divergent by Veronica Roth

2.0 Stars

Divergent is typical of Young Adult fiction – a lot of action, simplistic writing, weakly developed characters, teen angst and teen romance. The dystopian Chicago was an interesting world with people part of one of five factions. Those who show inclinations toward more than one faction are labeled as divergent and are considered dangerous. So much more could have been made of this world. Obviously, as Natalie Prior's brief appearances show, people do not just have the characteristics of one faction and are able to hide that more easily than the main character Tris. And what of the factionless? What is beyond the walls? Divergent seems to be more of a teen romance that happens to take place in an interesting dystopian society rather than a story of rebellion in a dystopian society that happens to have a bit of romance in it.
