This story centers on the conflict between a near immortal ship captain, called a Before, by the name of Michaela Cannon, and the sentient ship she is responsible for named Third Rectification (58 pairs). She doesn't so much as command it as try to work with it to accomplish their goal.
That goal is to determine what powerful race nearly exterminated all humanity and why super-luminal flight has suddenly disappeared from all the ships of the Polity. Eleven centuries have passed and no real clue has been found until now.
When Cannon discovers the first clue of why super-luminal speed was lost, it takes her down a path that forces a reckoning for her own sense of place in the Polity.The discovery will forever change the relationship between the sentient spaceships and the humans who live and work within it.
These mysteries unfold as the relationship between Cannon and Third Rectification are gradually and more deeply explored.
