SciFi of the "possible near future dystopia" ilk. In this case MonsantoAgriGen has figured out agricultural genetics so well that it would be possible to squeeze the balls of the world until it passed out ... so it did. This book is set in the aftermath.

Dystopia is not my flavor of choice, but this one was an engaging story and I'm glad I read it. However, it appears that Paolo Bacigalupi's subsequent writing is more of the same, so I probably won't return to him.
