Although this is a sequel to Blood Grains Speak Through Memories, it can be read on its own (but I do think having read the first story enhances appreciation of this one). The characters, while not necessarily sympathetic, are complex and have their own agendas, and the worldbuilding and the planet's history as they are slowly revealed become terrifyingly plausible.
