Floating Worlds

Many seem to be comparing this author to Le Guin and you can see why but she is not quite as good. Although this is a very relevant novel in these times dealing with male/female relationships and racism this does fall short due to a few flaws:

1) The female lead has very little emotional attachment to the characters and just seems to flow without clear motivation and justification from one scenario to the next (she is an Anarchist afterall)

2) The novel is overly long - but the description of the Styth culture is really good ala Shogun

However if you like me enjoy picking up a book from a fresh writer that is different from the rest of the pack then go for it. I can see why at the the time of writing this is a Nebula award winner
